Learn more →From Pepperwood to Dimple Dell, we keep Sandy's mature east bench canopy standing against canyon wind, clay soil, and high desert summers.
Serving Sandy, UT through our Salt Lake City crew, with the same expert arborists, the same standards, and the same around the clock availability.
Sandy sits where the valley floor climbs into the Wasatch foothills, and that elevation shapes everything about its trees. The older east bench neighborhoods carry a mature, irrigated canopy of Norway maples, blue spruce, and green ash that is now decades old, while the higher streets sit directly in the path of the downslope winds that pour out of the nearby canyons.

Sandy’s east bench carries some of the oldest, most established residential canopy in Salt Lake County: decades old Norway maples, blue spruce, and green ash planted when these neighborhoods were first built out. Large mature trees near a house raise the stakes on every removal or major pruning cut, since there is little margin for error when a limb comes down close to a roofline or a fence shared with a neighbor.
That size and age is exactly why the training and judgment of the arborist on site matters here more than in a younger city. It matters for HOA approvals, which several Sandy communities require in writing before removal. And it matters for insurance: if a tree fails and damages property, the carrier will ask whether it was professionally assessed beforehand.
We produce written tree risk assessments using TRAQ methodology, accepted by Salt Lake County HOAs, insurance carriers, and legal counsel. We carry full general liability and workers’ compensation insurance, and a certificate is available before any work begins.
Canyon wind is Sandy’s defining risk. The east bench sits closest to the mouths of the canyons that funnel the region’s downslope wind events, and it takes that force directly. Tall, dense conifers and mature trees with included bark or co-dominant stems are the first to fail. Strategic thinning that lets wind pass through the canopy, rather than push against a solid wall of branches, is the single most effective step a Sandy homeowner can take before the season turns.
Iron chlorosis is constant in Sandy’s alkaline clay. Maples and aspens show it first: yellowing leaves with green veins, then scorched margins and dieback on the more exposed limbs. It is a soil chemistry problem, not a watering problem, and it responds to targeted soil treatment rather than more irrigation.
Spruce decline works on the blue spruce anchoring so many older Sandy yards. Spruce spider mites and cytospora canker act together on trees already stressed by summer heat and drought, thinning the canopy from the bottom up over several seasons. On the mature green ash that lines many east bench streets, the arrival of emerald ash borer is a planning question, not a hypothetical: knowing which trees are healthy enough to protect now saves a rushed decision later. Early diagnosis, on spruce and ash alike, is what keeps a treatable problem from becoming a removal.
