Most storm damage traces back to a handful of predictable weak points: a limb overloaded with end weight, a co-dominant stem with a hidden crack at the union, a crown so dense it catches wind like a sail. A routine trim shapes the canopy and clears space. WindReady does more than that. It pairs a structural inspection with targeted pruning, done on a schedule that gets ahead of your region’s storm season instead of reacting after the fact.

What WindReady Targets

An arborist walks the tree looking for the specific defects that fail in wind: co-dominant stems and included bark unions, overextended limbs carrying too much end weight, dense crowns creating excess sail area, and dead or cracked wood that has already lost its strength. Each of those gets addressed with a specific cut, following ANSI A300 pruning standards.

Reduction cuts shorten overextended limbs back to a healthy lateral, which lowers the center of weight and shortens the lever arm the wind has to work with. Structural pruning corrects competing leaders early so the tree grows one strong trunk instead of a fork that splits later. Thinning, used carefully and within standard limits, opens the crown enough to reduce wind resistance without stripping the tree bare.

What WindReady will not do is top a tree or strip its interior growth down to bare limb ends. Both practices remove wood without addressing the actual failure points, and both leave the tree weaker and more likely to fail, not less.

When to Schedule It

The best window is before your region’s storm or high wind season, while the tree is dormant or just coming out of dormancy. Pruning ahead of leaf out lets the arborist see branch structure clearly and gives the tree time to seal its cuts before wind load picks up. Waiting until a storm watch is already in the forecast leaves no time to do the work properly.

Mature trees near a home, driveway, or power line benefit most, since that is where a failure does the most damage. Young trees benefit too. Structural pruning done early, while a tree is still small, is the cheapest and most effective time to prevent the co-dominant stems and weak unions that cause failures decades later.

What It Does Not Promise

Pruning reduces risk. It does not eliminate it. Wind speed, soil saturation, root health, and species all affect how a tree performs in a storm, and no arborist can promise a specific tree will stand through a specific storm. What a documented, standards based pruning program does is stack the odds in your favor: less sail area catching wind, less end weight loading the limbs, and no hidden structural defects waiting to let go. That is a meaningfully different starting position than a tree that has not been touched in years.
