Cabling
Cabling lowers the risk of a branch or codominant leader breaking or splitting by limiting how far it can move relative to the rest of the tree. Cables typically go in the upper crown or across a weak crotch. Traditional static cabling uses high strength steel wire. Newer dynamic cabling uses synthetic fabric rope that allows more natural movement in the tree.
Bracing
Bracing rods go into trees with multiple or codominant leaders to reduce the risk of a split, or to repair one that already happened. The rigid rods install directly through the union of the weak branches or stems. Bracing is often combined with cabling for the most stable support.
Staking
Staking holds a tree upright and keeps the root ball in place, or straightens a leaning trunk. It is used mainly on newly planted trees, giving them extra support while the root system establishes enough to stand on its own. Stakes should come out as soon as the tree can hold itself up, not stay on indefinitely.
Early attention is the best prevention
Most of the structural defects that eventually call for a support system can be prevented with proper pruning and maintenance over a tree’s life. Scheduling an arborist to check a tree every two years from the time it is planted goes a long way toward catching weak unions before they become a hazard.
