Troy’s Tree Challenges

Sugar maple, red oak, and eastern hemlock still stand in Troy’s older residential blocks alongside the Norway maple and littleleaf linden planted more recently along the streets. Emerald ash borer is a leading pest threat in Rensselaer County, working through untreated ash before the canopy visibly thins. Hemlock woolly adelgid moves slower but can show up on shaded, north-facing lots where hemlock has held its ground for decades.

Winter storms hit Troy hard, and the hillside terrain makes them worse. A nor’easter’s heavy wet snow or an ice storm adds weight a slope-anchored root system may not be built to hold, and wind exposure on higher lots compounds it. We prune for structure ahead of that season, and spongy moth defoliation is worth watching closely since a weakened canopy on a hillside tree has less margin than the same tree on flat ground.
