Colonie’s Tree Challenges

Sugar maple, red maple, and honeylocust are common across Colonie, alongside the Norway maple and littleleaf linden found in many of the town’s older plantings. Emerald ash borer is a leading pest threat here, and untreated ash near a home, driveway, or parking area deserves an inspection before it becomes a falling hazard. Hemlock woolly adelgid tends to show up on the more shaded, established lots where hemlock has had decades to grow.

Winter brings some of Colonie’s heaviest storm loads. Nor’easters and ice storms bring heavy wet snow that settles into weak branch unions, and mature canopies with more surface area catch more of that load. We prune for structure well before the season starts, and when spongy moth defoliation weakens a stand two years running, those trees deserve closer monitoring rather than waiting for the next storm to make the call.
