Clifton Park’s Tree Challenges

Sugar maple, red maple, and honeylocust show up throughout Clifton Park’s mix of older lots and newer subdivisions, alongside the eastern white pine that still lines some of the county’s undeveloped edges. Emerald ash borer is a leading pest threat here, and any untreated ash tree near a driveway or roofline should get a look before the canopy thins any further. Hemlock woolly adelgid is a slower threat, mostly on shaded parcels where hemlock still stands.

The bigger seasonal risk in Clifton Park is winter load. Nor’easters and ice storms move through the Capital Region most years, and heavy wet snow finds the weak unions first, especially on younger trees whose branch structure hasn’t fully matured. We prune for that structure ahead of the season rather than after a limb is already down, and spongy moth activity is worth watching since repeated defoliation leaves a tree with far less reserve to survive the next storm.
