Guilderland’s Tree Challenges

Sugar maple, red maple, and eastern white pine are common throughout Guilderland, growing alongside honeylocust and littleleaf linden in the town’s more developed sections. Emerald ash borer remains a leading pest threat here, and untreated ash near a home or driveway should be inspected regardless of which soil type it is growing in. Hemlock woolly adelgid shows up on the shadier, more established lots away from the sandier Pine Bush ground.

Winter storms bring the same nor’easter and ice storm risk to Guilderland as the rest of the Capital Region, but trees on the sandier soil near the Pine Bush can also carry more summer drought stress into that season, leaving less reserve to handle a heavy wet snow load. We prune for structure with that stress history in mind, and spongy moth defoliation is worth watching closely since a tree already stressed by dry, sandy soil has even less capacity to recover from repeated leaf loss.
