Why an Expert Arborist Matters in Southport
Southport is an old port town in Brunswick County at the mouth of the Cape Fear River, and its older streets and yards are known for large live oaks. Many of those trees are older than the houses beneath them. Age brings character and risk together: long horizontal limbs that carry a lot of weight, old wounds from past storms and pruning, and decay that can sit inside a limb for years. Keeping a tree like that healthy takes more planning than taking it down does.

Southport’s Tree Challenges
Southport’s position at the river mouth leaves it open to hurricanes, tropical storms, and nor’easters, along with the surge and flooding that can come with them. Live oaks are among the more wind firm trees on the coast, but one with decay at its base or a cracked union can still fail, and salt water sitting on the root zone after a flood can bring on decline over the following months. A post storm inspection catches damage that is easy to miss from the street.
Laurel oaks, common in yards around town, are more decay prone than live oaks and a frequent source of dropped limbs on calm days. Hypoxylon canker often shows up on them after drought or root damage. Laurel wilt has been confirmed in Brunswick County and kills redbay in the maritime woods nearby, while southern pine beetle and Ips engraver beetles attack stressed pines on the edges of town. Bagworms can strip red cedar and other evergreens in summer when they are not picked off early.
