Why an Expert Arborist Matters in Shallotte
Shallotte is a Brunswick County town on the Shallotte River, a few miles inland from Ocean Isle Beach and Holden Beach along US 17. Sitting back from the ocean gives its trees some shelter from direct salt spray, and pines and hardwoods here grow larger than they do on the islands. The flip side is height. A tall loblolly or laurel oak in a Shallotte yard has a long reach, and when one fails in a storm it can span a house, a garage, and part of the next lot.
The land around town mixes sandy ridges with low, wet ground along the river, its creeks, and the swamps between them. Trees on the wet ground tend to have shallow roots, and trees on the dry ridges face drought stress in hot summers, so the same species can carry different risks a few hundred feet apart. An arborist reads the site as well as the tree. Shallotte’s Tree Challenges
Pines fill many Shallotte lots, and southern pine beetle and Ips engraver beetles are the insects to watch, particularly after a dry summer or a storm that leaves broken tops and damaged roots. Fading crowns, pitch tubes, and fine boring dust in bark crevices are early signs, and removing an infested pine quickly can protect the pines around it. Laurel oaks and water oaks often develop hypoxylon canker and decay past middle age, which can leave a big limb hollow while the crown still looks full.
Laurel wilt has been confirmed in Brunswick County by the N.C. Forest Service, and dead redbay along wooded edges is a typical sign of it. Fall webworm tents appear on persimmons, pecans, and other hardwoods in late summer and rarely threaten a healthy tree. The bigger danger is weather. Hurricanes and tropical storms can push the river over its banks and soak the ground for days, and trees that stood through strong wind alone can come down once their roots sit in water.
