Why an Expert Arborist Matters in Oak Island
Oak Island is a barrier island in Brunswick County, with the Atlantic on one side and the Intracoastal Waterway and marsh on the other. Trees here grow in deep sand that drains fast and holds few nutrients, and they take salt spray whenever the wind comes off the ocean. Live oak, yaupon, wax myrtle, and red cedar handle those conditions well, which is why they make up much of the older maritime woods on the island. Many landscape trees planted close to the beach do not, and they show it in scorched leaves and thin crowns.
That setting changes what good pruning looks like. A wind shaped live oak has grown its canopy to shed wind, and heavy cuts that open it up can expose it to the salt and storm damage its shape helps it avoid. Oak Island’s Tree Challenges
Hurricanes, tropical storms, and nor’easters reach Oak Island with little between the ocean and the yard, and flooding or overwash can leave salt water sitting on root zones after the wind has passed. Trees that survive a storm can decline over the following season from that salt, so a follow up look a few months later often tells more than the day after. Pines weakened this way become targets for southern pine beetle and Ips engraver beetles, which can move from one stressed tree to the next.
Laurel wilt, confirmed in Brunswick County by the N.C. Forest Service, has been killing redbay in coastal woods across the region, and redbay is a typical understory tree in maritime forest along this stretch of coast. Laurel oaks in older yards can carry hypoxylon canker and hidden decay, and bagworms strip foliage from red cedar in summer when nobody catches them early. Structural pruning and dead wood removal before the tropical season reduce the debris a storm can throw at a roof or car.
