Rosenberg’s older neighborhoods carry mature live oak and bald cypress, trees that have had decades both to establish themselves near the river and to accumulate stress. Hypoxylon canker shows up as a gray bark blister on live oaks worn down by repeated drought and flood cycles, and it is often the first outward sign that a tree is closer to failure than its canopy suggests.

Formosan termites, drawn to humid, moisture rich wood, stay active in this area’s older trees, and oak wilt spreads between neighboring live oaks through grafted roots underground. But the dominant risk near the river is saturated clay losing its grip on a root plate during hurricane season or a heavy thunderstorm line, which is why whole tree uprooting, not just limb failure, is the pattern watched most closely in Rosenberg.
