Pecan Grove, in Fort Bend County along the Brazos River, was built around a golf course and named for pecan trees that predate the neighborhood itself. Those pecans, joined by a strong stand of native bald cypress along the riverbank, form a canopy older and heavier than what most surrounding subdivisions carry, and age changes what a tree needs.
A mature pecan puts on enormous scaffold limbs across the decades. On a golf course lot or a property backing up to the river, those limbs sit in open wind with nothing around to break a gust, so periodic structural assessment matters more here than in a sheltered yard. An arborist who has actually climbed and rigged legacy pecans reads stress in a limb differently than someone guessing from the ground. Every assessment comes back written and signed under TRAQ methodology, the format HOAs, insurers, and attorneys expect, and every crew works under full general liability and workers’ compensation coverage.
Soil along the Brazos in Pecan Grove holds water longer than clay farther inland. Bald cypress thrives in that, which is why it lines the river here, but shallower rooted trees, including some of the neighborhood’s live oaks, sit more exposed once the ground stays saturated through hurricane season. Hypoxylon canker shows up on pecans and oaks that have cycled through drought and flood one too many times, often the first outward sign that a tree is closer to failure than its canopy suggests.
Formosan termites favor this humid, river adjacent setting and move fast into any pecan or oak already weakened by root disease or storm damage. Between the golf course fairways and the open riverbank, wind driven limb and trunk failure during a hurricane or a severe thunderstorm line is the risk we plan around most closely for Pecan Grove’s older trees.
