Gardner’s Tree Challenges

Gardner’s extended winter season drives most of its tree risk. Ice and heavy wet snow load cause many of the limb failures here, and because snow tends to arrive earlier and stay longer than in towns closer to Worcester proper, the exposure window runs longer each year. Emerald ash borer has moved through the local ash population, leaving standing dead trees that become brittle and unpredictable once winter sets in. Hemlock woolly adelgid is active in shaded, wooded lots common to this hillier terrain, thinning canopies gradually enough that damage often goes unnoticed until a hemlock is already compromised. Codominant stems on older Norway maples and lindens planted along Gardner’s streets are a common failure point once heavy snow arrives, making a pre winter inspection worth scheduling early in this part of the county.
