Emerald ash borer has hit green ash hard across Dickson County, and because so much of the tree line here is less closely watched than an urban street, dead ash can stand unnoticed for a season before it becomes a hazard to a fence line, a driveway, or a home. Trees on Dickson County’s clay to silt loam, especially after a wet stretch that saturates the ground, lose root anchorage exactly when the wind picks up, and a healthy looking tree can go over roots and all. Ice storms add a second failure mode most winters, loading limbs on species like tulip poplar and sugar maple past what they can hold. An expert arborist checks root flare and soil moisture as closely as the canopy before calling a tree safe through the next storm.
