Clearfield grew up around Hill Air Force Base, and much of its residential canopy was planted in the same postwar decades, meaning a large share of the city’s trees are now mature and closer to the end of their functional lives. That canopy sits on the same alkaline clay found across Davis County, low in organic matter and quick to lock up iron, under intense sun and cold winters that stress an aging tree faster than a young one.
