Bettendorf’s Tree Challenges

Freeman maple, littleleaf linden, and honeylocust make up much of Bettendorf’s residential canopy, and each carries a different local vulnerability. Emerald ash borer has already devastated the area’s ash trees, leaving standing dead wood that needs removal before it fails unpredictably. Oak wilt is the longer term threat for the county’s bur oaks, spreading through connected root systems between neighboring trees on adjoining lots.

Any remaining American elms carry real Dutch elm disease risk, and we watch for the early flagging that signals infection. But the recurring, near annual threat in Bettendorf is winter itself: heavy snow and ice loading onto maple and linden canopies until a weak union gives way. Derechos and severe summer thunderstorms add a second, faster moving threat on top of that winter risk, which is why we plan pruning schedules around both seasons, not just one.
