Why an Expert Arborist Matters in Willard
Willard has grown quickly as a community just north of Springfield, and many lots were carved from farm ground where eastern redcedar had spread across old pastures. The result is a mix of cedar thickets, scattered post and blackjack oaks, and newly planted yard trees on thin, rocky soil over limestone. Sinkholes and other karst features are common in this part of Greene County, and ground that settles or drains unevenly affects how well roots hold.
Cedars and oaks left along property lines often lean toward the open space created by clearing, and leaning edge trees are among the first to go over when wet soil meets strong wind. Silver maple and callery pear planted in newer yards grow fast but split easily. An arborist can sort out which trees are worth keeping and which need attention, and can put a TRAQ risk assessment in writing for an HOA or insurer.
Willard’s Tree Challenges
Bagworms are a routine problem on Willard’s eastern redcedars, and heavy infestations can kill small trees or ruin a screen planting. The same cedars host cedar apple rust, which spots the leaves of nearby apples and crabapples. Emerald ash borer has been confirmed in Greene County, so any ash is worth an inspection, and oak wilt, present in Missouri, threatens red and pin oaks. A look at the canopy in early summer catches most of these problems while they can still be managed.
Pine wilt is common in Missouri and kills Scots and Austrian pines, which some rural Willard yards used as windbreaks. Storm exposure matches the rest of the Springfield area, with spring thunderstorms, tornado warnings and occasional ice, and the May 2009 derecho showed how much damage straight line wind can do across southwest Missouri. Saturated soil after long rains also makes shallow rooted cedars easier to topple. Removing dead pines and weak limbs ahead of storm season keeps the cleanup smaller.
