Sonoma’s Tree Challenges

Coast live oak dominates the woodland running up into the Mayacamas foothills around Sonoma, and it is the species that needs the closest look for sudden oak death, an established regional threat that progresses quietly for years. Properties closer to the foothills carry more of this exposure than lots down near the plaza.

Sonoma’s dry season brings its own hazard: offshore wind events add both wildfire risk and direct mechanical stress to foothill trees already thinned by drought. Then winter reverses the problem, with storms dropping heavy rain onto adobe clay that holds water long enough to destabilize root plates that seemed solid all summer. London plane and Chinese elm around town properties add a third variable, since old pruning wounds on both species can hide decay that only becomes obvious when a limb finally gives way.
