Potomac, in Montgomery County, keeps more of its original forest character than almost anywhere else in the Washington suburbs. Large lots along the river corridor still carry mature stands of white oak, black cherry, and tulip poplar that development cleared away elsewhere decades ago. That’s a genuine asset for the property, but it changes the engineering problem an arborist is solving: trees grown up together in a stand have spent years competing for light and root space, so a lean or a crack on one trunk often has to be read against the whole grove around it, not in isolation.
That’s the judgment call that separates real forestry experience from a quick trim. On Potomac’s larger properties we routinely walk the full stand rather than just the tree someone called about, because a weak point three trees over can be the actual driver of risk. Every visit produces a written, signed tree risk assessment using TRAQ methodology, accepted by HOAs, insurance carriers, and legal counsel, backed by the insurance that matters.
The native backbone of Potomac’s wooded lots is white oak, black cherry, and tulip poplar, with ornamental red maple and callery pear typically closer to the house itself. Bacterial leaf scorch turns up regularly in the area’s mature oaks, and spotted lanternfly pressure continues countywide, finding plenty of hosts scattered through these larger wooded parcels.
Because so many Potomac properties sit close to the river and its floodplain soils, saturated ground after a nor’easter or a remnant tropical system drives root failure here more than it does in the drier, more compacted lots nearer the county’s center. An arborist weighing a Potomac tree has to account for that soil and stand history together, not just the visible symptom, before any saw fires up.
