Pace’s Tree Challenges

The tree mix in Pace splits along its growth line. Live oak, crape myrtle, and sabal palm are common in the newer subdivisions, while older slash pine and water oak stands hold on toward the edges of town. Southern pine beetle is the sharper threat where those pine stands cluster, since an infestation can move through a stressed grove and take out healthy neighbors within a single season if nobody catches it early. Hypoxylon canker tends to show up on hardwoods already weakened by construction disturbance or a dry stretch, and it is often the real explanation behind a limb that looked sound right up until it wasn’t.

Hurricane season is the threat every Gulf Coast town braces for, and Pace’s inland position trades salt spray dieback for a different problem: windthrow in trees whose root plates were compromised months earlier by grading work nobody connected to the storm. Ganoderma root rot at the base of older oaks is the other quiet risk, easy to miss until a trunk fails at the exact point that looked strongest. Timing pruning and removal to the season, rather than reacting only after damage, is what keeps a Pace property ahead of the next storm instead of cleaning up behind it.
