Why an Expert Arborist Matters in Middletown
Middletown is a small city in western Orange County, set in the Wallkill Valley with the Shawangunk Ridge rising to the west. Its older neighborhoods grew up with sugar maple, Norway maple and pin oak planted along streets and in front yards, and many of those trees are now at an age where decay, old pruning wounds and root damage from sidewalk and utility work start to matter. Newer subdivisions on the edges of the city have younger trees that need shaping more than removal.

Middletown’s Tree Challenges
Glacial till over shale lies under much of the area, rocky with clay pockets, and on city lots it has often been graded, filled and compacted during construction. Roots in that soil stay shallow. When a nor’easter or a remnant tropical storm soaks the ground and wind follows, a big maple or oak with a restricted root zone can go over at the root plate without extreme gusts. Trenching for driveways, patios and utility lines makes it worse by cutting the anchoring roots on one side.
Winter adds the other main risk. Heavy wet snow and ice build on limbs, and trees with co-dominant stems or included bark, including many older Norway maples and callery pears, tend to split at the union. Emerald ash borer has killed much of the ash in Orange County, spongy moth outbreaks defoliate oaks in some years, and spotted lanternfly has turned up in the county, so an arborist checks for more than storm damage on a site visit.
