Mansfield’s Tree Challenges

Live oaks and water oaks anchor Mansfield’s older residential streets, while loblolly pine dominates the surrounding timber country that supports much of the parish economy. That pine density makes southern pine beetle a major threat locally, since an outbreak in an unmanaged stand can spread from tree to tree faster than most homeowners notice. Hypoxylon canker follows close behind in drought stressed hardwoods, especially oaks that have lost canopy density to age or storm damage.

Native subterranean termites can work decayed root systems and structural wood from the inside across De Soto Parish, and a tree already compromised that way has far less capacity to withstand hurricane or tornado wind when a storm system moves through. Because Mansfield sits farther from the river than Shreveport proper, drainage issues show up less often here, but wind exposure on the edges of open pasture and timber tracts runs higher. We plan pruning and removals around that exposure well before storm season arrives.
