Gautier’s Tree Challenges

Ganoderma butt rot is a serious concern for Gautier’s older trees, since it attacks the root flare and lower trunk in ways that don’t always show above the surface until the tree is already compromised. That risk compounds on lots closer to the marsh, where poor drainage and a high water table keep root zones saturated for days after ordinary rain, let alone a tropical system. When a hurricane does move through, that already-weakened root structure is what gives way first, making windthrow a real threat even in trees that look otherwise healthy. Drake elms and crape myrtles fare reasonably well on Gautier’s better-drained lots, but Formosan termites remain active in the area’s mature hardwoods regardless of soil type. Regular base inspections and drainage-aware pruning are the two habits that keep Gautier’s trees ahead of these slow-building problems.
