Live oaks along the water here can look fully healthy above ground while carrying root systems stressed by seasonal soil saturation, a slow problem that stays invisible until a storm finally tests it. Bald cypress on the lower banks deal with a similar saturation pattern even outside hurricane season. Ganoderma butt rot and lethal bronzing in palms are the pest issues we check most often on a Fleming Island visit, and spanish moss loading tends to build up fastest on the older oak limbs closest to the river.

Hurricane windthrow is the headline risk for a river peninsula with this much open exposure, and it deserves more weight here than on a sheltered inland lot in the same county. Add in the nation’s highest lightning frequency and the daily summer thunderstorms that come with a Central Florida wet season, and pruning and removal timing has to be planned around the whole storm calendar, not just the day a call comes in.
