Why an Expert Arborist Matters in Colorado City

The native ground is pinyon and juniper country with sandy, rocky soil that turns alkaline in places. Planted shade trees and fruit trees here live on irrigation, so how water reaches the root zone, and how a tree was pruned when young, decides much of how it handles the next hard winter or dry summer.

Colorado City’s Tree Challenges
Drought is the root of many problems on the Strip. Pinyons and other pines weakened by a dry stretch draw Ips bark beetles, which bore under the bark and can kill a tree within a season, often showing first as fading needles near the top. Cottonwoods along the washes and in yards can develop cytospora canker once drought or root damage stresses them, with sunken, discolored bark and dying branches. On alkaline ground, iron chlorosis turns new leaves pale yellow between green veins, especially on fruit trees and other irrigated plantings.
Weather adds its own load. Spring wind whips across the open valley and can snap weak limbs or tip shallow rooted trees. Monsoon storms from July into September bring sudden gusts, heavy rain, and flash flooding in the washes, which can undercut roots along the banks. Aphids and scale feed on stressed fruit and shade trees and leave sticky honeydew behind. An expert arborist sorts out which of these is at work before recommending pruning, treatment, or removal.
