Neighborhood streets on the island run heavy on red maple, flowering cherry, and European birch, while the bluffs and undeveloped lots hold tall Douglas fir, western red cedar, and western hemlock. Laminated root rot is the failure worth watching hardest in those bigger conifers. Swiss needle cast thins conifer crowns gradually, and a thinner crown is not necessarily a safer one. It often signals a tree already working harder than it should to stay upright. Birch under summer drought stress draws bronze birch borer, so crown dieback gets checked closely once the dry season sets in. Between wind exposure off open water, bluff erosion, and ground that stays wet through a long winter, Bainbridge Island asks more of a root system than most inland properties in this market ever will.
