Raritan Borough sits along the Raritan River in Somerset County, and that river frontage shapes the tree work here more than almost anything else. Trees on or near the flood plain deal with periodic saturation that regular upland trees never see, and repeated soaking from nor’easters and remnant tropical systems can slowly compromise a root system that looked healthy the year before. An arborist working in Raritan checks root flare and soil moisture history, not just the crown, before calling a tree safe.
The borough’s soil runs clay to loam like much of the wider region, but the river bottom sections trend heavier and wetter, which limits oxygen at the root zone even without a storm event. Combined with the humid, hot summers and cold winters typical here, that means species tolerant of wet feet tend to do better on Raritan’s lower lots than ones that prefer well-drained upland ground.
Red maple and honeylocust handle Raritan’s wetter river-bottom soil better than most, while callery pear and pin oak are more common on the borough’s higher, drier lots. Spotted lanternfly has spread through the Raritan Valley’s maple and tree of heaven hosts, and emerald ash borer remains a serious risk to any ash left standing near the river corridor. Saturated-soil root failure is the storm risk we watch closest here, since Raritan’s flood-plain trees carry more accumulated moisture stress than trees just a few blocks away on higher ground.
Raritan is in the New York service area. Calls route through national intake until local coverage is verified.
