Kent is one of the more rural towns in Putnam County, with larger wooded parcels, reservoir buffer land, and back roads lined by mature oak and maple that have grown up largely undisturbed. That maturity is an asset and a liability. Older trees hold more structural risk from decades of storm exposure, deadwood, and old wounds than a young tree ever would, and on a big lot those defects are easy to miss without someone trained to look for them.
Kent’s soil follows the thinner, rockier pattern typical of the Hudson Highlands rather than the deep clay loam closer to the city, which limits how far roots can anchor on a hillside. Combined with the region’s nor’easters and summer thunderstorms, that shallower rooting is why wind throw in mature oak and maple stands is the storm call we field most often from Kent properties.
Red maple and pin oak dominate Kent’s wooded lots, with honeylocust and callery pear more common closer to developed pockets of town. Emerald ash borer is a serious threat to any remaining ash on these larger parcels, and spotted lanternfly continues to spread through maple and tree of heaven hosts across Putnam County. Because many Kent properties border New York City watershed reservoir land, removals and pruning near those buffer zones need an arborist who understands the access rules as well as the tree work itself, on top of the wind throw risk that comes with mature stands on shallow, rocky ground.
