Gresham’s Tree Challenges

The east side’s older tree stock means laminated root rot is a real concern in Gresham’s Douglas fir, often hidden until a windstorm exposes it. Swiss needle cast shows up here too, thinning conifer canopies over a few wet springs and leaving trees less able to shed wind load. Ornamental birches planted along many Gresham streets are also vulnerable to bronze birch borer once summer dry spells stress them, with dieback starting near the crown as the first visible clue.

Winter is the season that tests all of it at once. Saturated soil after weeks of rain gives root systems less to hold onto, and when wind funnels through the Gorge corridor on top of that, tall conifers with any hidden decay are the first to fail. Bigleaf maple on these older lots carries its own risk too, since included bark at old branch unions can split under a heavy wet snow load even on a tree that otherwise looks sound. An expert arborist times pruning and removal work around that calendar, not just around what looks urgent on the surface, and flags the lots where decades of untouched growth have left more weight in the canopy than the root system was built to carry.
