Elgin sits in Bastrop County, not Williamson, and that puts it right at the western edge of the sandier soils that run toward the Lost Pines. It is a meaningful change from the thin, rocky, limestone shelf that defines Round Rock and most of the metro to the west. Trees here can establish deeper roots in places, but the county’s climate still runs the same hot, semi-arid pattern with long droughts punctuated by flash floods that stresses live oak, cedar elm, and Texas red oak across the whole region.
Because Elgin sits on the boundary between two soil systems, the right call on a given tree, whether a removal, a cable, or a simple prune, depends on reading the specific site, not applying a blanket assumption from either county. We produce written tree risk assessments using TRAQ methodology, accepted by HOAs, insurance carriers, and legal counsel, and carry the insurance that matters.
Oak wilt remains a serious risk for Elgin’s live oaks, which can share root systems and pass the fungus underground without any visible above ground symptom. Hypoxylon canker follows drought stress in oaks and cedar elms, often hidden until bark begins sloughing away from decayed wood beneath. Cotton root rot is present in the region’s alkaline pockets and can kill a tree from the roots up with little warning.
Ball moss loading adds real weight to live oak canopies already carrying drought stress, and it is common enough in Elgin’s older tree stands to check on every visit. Drought, flash floods, hail, and occasional ice round out the risk calendar here, so timing matters as much as technique. An expert arborist reads the cause behind a stressed tree before any saw fires up.
