Cranberry, north of Pittsburgh in the region’s fastest growing corridor, has a noticeably younger tree canopy than most of the older Allegheny County suburbs, planted alongside new subdivisions and commercial corridors rather than inherited from a century of growth. The cool humid continental climate turns wetter with elevation, and the acidic, rocky soil common to the area does not forgive nursery stock that went into the ground without early structural correction. A young tree with a bad branch union does not fail this year, it fails in year fifteen or twenty, which is exactly why the training an arborist brings to a five year old tree matters as much as it does to a mature one.
Every job comes with a written tree risk assessment using TRAQ methodology, accepted by HOAs, insurance carriers, and legal counsel, useful documentation for Cranberry’s many newer HOA governed developments, and every crew carries full general liability and workers’ compensation insurance.
Red maple and callery pear are common choices in Cranberry’s newer subdivisions for their fast growth, and that speed is exactly what makes early structural correction so important here. Left alone, both species develop narrow branch angles that hold up fine for a decade and then split under ice load or storm wind almost predictably once the crown matures. Where older hemlock stands border the newer development at the edges of the township, hemlock woolly adelgid remains active, and emerald ash borer has claimed most of what ash remains.
Ice storms, derechos, and saturated soil root failure round out the seasonal risk calendar, and a young tree with uncorrected structure carries more failure risk into those events than one that was trained properly from the start. Getting ahead of it with a formative prune while the tree is still small is far cheaper, and far less dramatic, than the alternative in Cranberry.
