Burien’s Tree Challenges

Burien’s residential streets carry a familiar Pacific Northwest mix of red maple, flowering cherry, and European birch, set against native Douglas fir and western hemlock closer to the bluff itself. Birch trees stressed by dry summer stretches or tight root space are common bronze birch borer targets, and we see that pattern often in Burien’s older, more established yards.

The larger concern remains windthrow. Because Burien sits so close to open water, winter windstorms hit with force that inland King County lots rarely see, and a conifer already carrying laminated root rot or a Swiss needle cast thinned canopy is the one most likely to come down. An expert arborist inspects root flare and canopy density together on bluff properties, since either weakness on its own is manageable but the combination is what leads to failure.
